World Water day is celebrated every year on 22nd of March throughout the world to increase the awareness amongst people towards the importance of water. Water bodies cover three-fourth of Earth’s surface. 97% of this water is present in oceans as salt water and is unfit for human consumption. Fresh water accounts for only about 2.7%. Nearly 70% of this occurs as ice sheets and glaciers in Antarctica and other inaccessible places. Only one per cent of fresh water is available and fit for human use. It takes a lot of blue to stay green so it is very important to conserve this precious resource.

Water saving techniques should be promoted in the societies, communities, villages including business sections, as they are the main consumers of water. Farmers, children, and women are to be educated about using and saving water in efficient manner and the value of water in their life.

Simple ways to save water at home.

  • Make sure all faucets are properly shut off after use.
  • Rinse fruits, vegetables and dishes by putting them into a bowl/basin full of water and swishing it around. This will save you from continuously running the tap water in the sink.
  • Automatic dishwashers and clothes washers should be fully loaded for optimum water conservation.
  • Use prefilled bowl/glass of water while brushing your teeth or shaving. Turn off the tap while washing your hands when applying soap. Install water-saving showerheads and low-flow faucet aerators
  • Get a low-flow toilet. Newer models of toilet bowls offer dual flush options, which massively reduces the water per flush.
  • Clean the car using a pail of soapy water. Use the hose only for rinsing so that we can save water when washing a car.

Saving water at office.

  • Install aerators on taps: Aerators reduce the amount of water flowing from the tap by up to 50%, while maintaining the pressure.
  • The easiest way to save water is to periodically check and fix leaks from pipes, fixtures, appliances, and equipment.
  • Engage and inform employees: Put up posters and stickers to remind staff about water saving habits. Discuss water efficiency at team meetings and provide regular reports on water use figures.
  • Low flush and dual-flush toilets: Use water-saving toilets, which can reduce the amount of water, used for each flush.
  • Install water efficient equipment wherever possible and water your lawn only when it’s needed.
  • Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues, insects and other such waste in a trash container rather than in the toilet.
  • If you use evaporative air conditioners, set your thermostat to 24°C.

Clean water scarcity is not a problem of one country or continent; it is a global issue, which needs to be solved globally by increasing awareness among people worldwide. SAVE WATER SAVE LIFE
