7 Simple ways to save electricity

Do Right Save Light! Today’s wastage is Tomorrow’s shortage

Global climate is changing at alarming and extreme rates, so it is our responsibility to save the Mother Earth to make sure that future generations will still be able to enjoy the beauty and gifts that this world has to offer. And one of the ways we can bring a small change to help is by saving natural resources. We can start with a small step by saving electricity at our homes and offices.

Why is it important to save electricity and how does it contribute in preserving Mother Earth ?

It helps conserve natural resources. Electricity can be obtained from solar or wind power, but most electricity used in homes comes from the burning of fossil fuels such as oil or coal. These resources are not unlimited or renewable; the faster they are used and the more electricity that is consumed, the quicker they will be depleted.

Burning fossil fuels for producing electricity releases enormous amounts of pollution into the atmosphere. Acid rain, soot, carbon dioxide, and toxic gases are just a few of the ways electricity production poisons the environment. Even the act of mining coal to be burned is detrimental to the ecosystem. Another damage to the ecosystem is seen in oceans and soil whenever there’s an oil spill. These ecological threats are just a few of the reasons why it is so important to conserve electricity. Let’s start contributing our share by following simple steps to save electricity.

1. Turn down the thermostat By turning your thermostat just 3 degrees up or down, you can save about a hundreds each year. If you normally keep it on 18 during the summer for instance, turn it up to 21. You won’t really notice the difference in temperature but you will notice it on your energy consumption and bill.

2. Unplug when not in use – When you are not using electronics, unplug them. Even when they are turned off, they will continue to use energy if they are plugged in.

3. Use smaller appliances – Larger appliances will naturally use more energy. Simply using the microwave as opposed to the electric oven a couple of times each week or choosing smaller lamps instead of using your overhead lights will help you to save as well. During summer and anytime it’s warm enough, use your outdoor grill to cook instead of kitchen appliances. Not only does this save energy, it’s tasty.

4. Paint the roof – Studies have shown that by simply painting your roof white, you will use up to 40 percent less energy to cool your home.

5. Cover leftovers – When you place uncovered liquids in your refrigerator, it causes vapours to be emitted that will add to the workload of the compressor, making your fridge use more energy.

6. Check your windows – Make sure that you keep your curtains or window blinds closed on really sunny days to keep out the sun and prevent your air conditioner from running. During the winter months, keep the curtains and blinds open to allow sunlight in which will keep your home warmer naturally.

7. Change your light bulbs – There are a number of energy efficient light bulbs on the market and while they may be a bit more expensive initially, they will help you to save hundreds on your light bill over the course of a year or so.
